I was randomly browsing through my old “college stuffs” when I came across an album a close friend (Meriam) gave to me during my 18th birthday. It was a compilation of messages from people close to my heart.
I opened it page by page, savouring each word my closest friends wrote me. I was smiling realizing how blessed I am to have these people in my life.
And then I came across this particular page. I paused for a moment and stared blankly.
“Johayanah,” I whispered.
My heart crushed and I almost shed a tear remembering this sweet friend of mine. Yaya (that is how we call her) was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia a year ago and her battle has ended just last month. A kind-hearted, beautiful young lady gone too soon.
(Just to clarify: the girl in the picture is me. The album was a gift for my birthday so it has my pictures all over it.)
I closed the album as memories of Yaya came flashing back to my mind.
“I was blessed to have known this young woman,” I said.
I stared blankly for a second and then I smiled knowing that she has fought a good fight.
I composed myself and placed the album back to its place.
I miss her.
